Jomon civilization (7) 2015/04/24

Jomon period last over 10,000 years from 11,000 B.C. to 1,000 B.C. They did not have letters and so many things were left unknown and mysterious.  However nearly 100,000 ruins of Jomon period have been discovered which gave various indications of real Jomon life.

As climates or circumstances changed, people had to move places of settlements and a population through the period went up and down. Nevertheless they did not change their basic philosophy and their basic style of living.

Namely through 10,000 years, they kept hunting and fishing living style. They kept their awe and respect to great nature and kept woods in health condition instead of destroying them. They kept worshipping ancestors and also they kept sincere sympathies with spirits of all livings.

Moreover they kept showing keen interest in producing better and more advanced earthen vessels not only in practical aspect but also in artistic aspect.

They kept showing keen interest in clay figures throughout Jomon period. Although  they stopped producing figures once and for all just after Jomon period ended.

They kept showing keen interest in developing construction technology in giant wooden building.

They took careful attention for dogs but would not raise livestock as foods.

These their basic philosophy and their basic life style are inherited to modern Japanese after 3,000 years from the end of Jomon period.
